A good way to tell if your granite or marble needs to be sealed is the “Paper Towel Test”. Put a wet paper towel on it, and be sure to really soak it. (Use a white paper towel with no printing on it, or a white cotton towel.) Wait about 5 minutes or so. Is the area under the paper towel dark from the water soaking into the granite? If the granite is dark from the water soaking in… Your Granite Needs to be Sealed! The purpose of sealer is to keep liquids from penetrating the granite. Seal your granite when liquids other than water soak into your stone beacuse these "other" liquids can leave behind hard to remove stains and also are home to germs and bacteria.

This picture shows the back of a "Grigio Carnico" marble tile, half of which has been treated with MB-6 giving it a wet look. MB-6 is the ideal product to give you the “wet look” on tumbled marble, low-honed finished limestone and travertine, honed (black) granite, etc. It also acts as a water-repellent sealer.

Many times the “dullness” is “ON” the granite. Cleaners, sealer and other films can build on the surface of the stone. A method that has been very effective for us has been to use ultra fine “#0000” steel wool to remove the buildup from the surface of the stone. Once the film is removed and the granite is shining again, do the above-mentioned “Paper towel test”. Be sure to use cleaner specified “for natural stone” to prevent further buildup problems.
